What you can expect to learn
Diving in currents opens up a world of new dive sites that often host the most spectacular marine life. Go shore diving and you will discover the simplicity of just walking off the beach and exploring your favourite dive sites with ease. But wave, tides and currents can impact your dives and affect your safety if you do not know how to handle them.
The SSI Waves, Tides and Currents specialty will enhance your dive skills and understanding, so you can enjoy diving in different environments safely and with confidence. You will gain a better understanding of dynamic open water environments and learn about the environmental conditions that affect different dive sites. The SSI Waves, Tides & Currents Course consists of
- Two Open Water Dives- Where its time to use the knowledge and skills you acquired, in the open ocean to complete the SSI Search and Recovery Course.
Maximum Training Depth : 30 meters / 100 feet
Course equipment requirements
*Equipment will be provided by your Dive Centre. We recommend that you should get your own gear once you become a certified diver.
Course prerequisites
Minimum age:
- 10 years old.
Have the following SSI certifications or equivalent from a recognized training agency:
- Referral Diver
Get started
- Complete all academic sessions and assessments outlined in the instructor manual forWaves,Tides and Currents.
- Complete the program’s final exam.
- Complete at least two (2) open water training dives as outlined in the instructor manual forWaves,Tides and Currents.

How long will this take?
Recommended hours for completion: 5-10. The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual instructor, based on student needs, student ability and water conditions.
